Suozzi: Memorial Day Commemorations

Glen Cove Mayor Ralph Suozzi on the true meaning of the holiday and what the City is doing to honor it.

Memorial Day will be commemorated on Monday, May 28th. Please attend the Memorial Service at 11 a.m. at Monument Park at the corner of School and North Street.

This is a day our community honors the men and women of our country who served and died with honor to protect our nation and our ideals.

The ceremony will be followed by a wonderful parade through downtown Glen Cove. Come out and celebrate and share the pride of our veterans, the Memorial Day Committee and the many organizations who participate to honor America and its heroes, our veterans, but especially those soldiers who gave their lives in service to our country so that we may live ours in freedom.

Among the city’s many preparations for this solemn day of remembrance is the replacement of old and tattered flags on all of our city flagpoles. I ask the public to please fly Old Glory proudly and also take the time to replace old, faded or tattered flags prior to Memorial Day each and every year.

Let’s keep Old Glory flying high and proudly in honor of our veterans, our military families and as a symbol of our strength, liberty and love of country.
