Germino Begins Campaign for Nassau Legislature

Robert Germino, R-Glen Cove, recently kicked off his campaign for 18th Nassau Legislature District.

Glen Cove resident Robert Germino recently began his campaign as the Republican candidate for Nassau County Legislature District 18.

The former United States Marine Corps captain is an Iraq veteran, board member of the not-for-profit “Semper4Soldiers,” and .

Germino – who is currently a member of County Executive Edward Mangano's Staff – was nominated by leader of the Glen Cove Republican Party Paul Meli at Wisdom Lane Middle School in Levittown on May 24.

Germino said his platform will focus on three major points: economic growth, efficient government and responsible spending.

In a June 5 news release, Germino said his platform is to "be responsive to the needs of the local business owners who create jobs in our community; support initiatives that 'right-size' government such as the privatization of Long Island Bus; support budgets that do not exceed the current rate of inflation; ensure all county employees contribute to the cost of health care; ensure that our local firefighters, police officers, and EMS have necessary, lifesaving equipment."

Germino will run against to succeed incumbent Diane Yatauro, D-Glen Cove.

DeRiggi-Whitton said her commitment to economic development in the area is key to her platform and she plans to protect programs aimed at seniors, youth and veterans and improve education opportunities for local kids — all while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

Yatauro – who was elected to the 18th Legislature District in 2003 and has served as Minority Leader since 2009 – that she plans to leave political life to focus her attention on family.

"In Glen Cove, we learned that we cannot continue to borrow money for policies our city can't afford. Moody's Investors Service recently downgraded Glen Cove's credit rating to 'Baa3' with a ‘negative outlook’ for our city's financial future," Germino said. "As a Nassau County Legislator, I will ensure that the County works within its means. It must never teeter on the brink of junk bond status as the City of Glen Cove."

County Legislative District 18 includes Glen Cove, Sea Cliff, Bayville, Locust Valley, Brookville, Glen Head, Greenvale, and Jericho.
