Glen Cove Notebook: 9/11 Candlelight Commemoration

Sept. 11 candlelight ceremony, Glen Cove Public Library Exhibit in this week's city notebook.

The City of Glen Cove is hosting a at Sunday at 6 p.m. to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Sept. 11. All residents are encouraged to join.

“The idea is to have a very solemn occasion where the focus is on spirituality, service and togetherness,” said Mayor Ralph Suozzi.

The event has been in the making since the very beginning of the year, according Deputy Mayor Maureen Basdavanos.

“The children and young people are who we really want to touch by letting them know how Glen Cove, as a community, responded that day,” she said.

To commemorate the lives of the three Glen Cove residents who died on 9/11, there will be a “dedication of the roads,” presented by the Mayor.

"Impressions" on Display at the Glen Cove Public Library

The is featuring artwork entitled “Impressions” by long-time resident Minou Burnham.

Burnham was born near the Loire Valley, France, and lived in Paris for many years. She studied in America with such well-known artists as John Howard Sanden, Oldrich Teply and Hananiah Harari, all at the Art Students League portrait classes.

She is a Life Member of the Art Students League in New York City. Her works can be found in many private collections in America, France, Spain, Monaco and Switzerland.

The inspiration and examples of the Impressionists have constantly reminded her that there truly is beauty in the scenes of everyday life. 

In 1985, one of her seascapes of Orient Point, Long Island was accepted by the "Salon d'Automne," a juried exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris. The following year, her painting of Monet's home and gardens in Giverny was also accepted. 

Minou received the Art Students League "Best in Show" in 2001, and 2002. In 2003 she won the "First Best in Show."

The show will be exhibited until Sept. 29 in the Community Room. The library is located at 4 Glen Cove Avenue, Glen Cove. Hours: Monday-Thursday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
