Glen Cove Notebook: Mayor’s Snapper Derby, Project Guard Program Renewed

Snapper Derby, Project Guard and Sept. library exhibits in this week's city notebook.

Glen Cove’s youngest fishermen should start honing their fishing skills; is set for Saturday Aug. 27 at the .

Mayor Ralph Suozzi invites children ages six to 16 years old to bring along their own rod and reel to the event.

Registration at the pier will be held only between 8:15 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Fishing begins 8:30 a.m. and continues until 11:30 a.m. The derby has a Junior Division for children ages 6-10 and the Senior Division is for children ages 11-16.

First, second, and third place trophies will be presented to participants in each division, as well as the “Best Angler.”  Each participant also receives a Glen Cove Mayor’s Snapper Derby tee shirt, hot dog, soda and a raffle ticket for prizes.

This event is held rain or shine and is only open to Glen Cove residents.

Boys & Girls Club Renew Project Guard Program

The , in association with the American Red Cross, announce the renewal of the Project Guard Course for the fall. The program enables Nassau County teens to obtain their lifeguard certification through a grant from United Way of Long Island, according to a news release.

“We are really looking forward to another great season,” said Executive Director Melissa Tierney. “Teenagers who attend this program will learn not only how to be lifeguards, but also learn the value of strong work ethic, responsibility and perseverance.”

Classes will be held on Saturday and Sunday mornings beginning Sept. 18 at Pratt Recreation Center at Long Island University, C.W. Post Campus. Interested teens are asked to attend the  mandatory orientation with a parent Thursday, Sept. 1 at 4 p.m. at Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club. Minimum age for participation in the program is 15.

The has announced its September exhibits. In the lobby showcases, there will be a military exhibit by Bob Staada. Artwork by Minou Burnham will be on display in the Community Room.
