Glen Cove’s relationship with 9/11 is a unique one, according to Suozzi.

“The ferry terminal really makes Glen Cove’s experience with 9/11 different than other local communities because we were part of the rescue effort,” he said. “As America came together as a nation, we also did the best could to come together as a community.”

Although almost one month remains until Sept. 11, the gears have already been turning on the city’s 10-year anniversary project for some time now, according to Deputy Mayor Maureen Basdavanos.

“We started talking about this in the very beginning of the year,” she said. “The children and young people are who we really want to touch by letting them know how Glen Cove, as a community, responded that day.”

Glen Cove has been “casting out a big net,” said Suozzi, and has been contacting first responders - including employees and public officials who were around during that time - as well as members of local clergy of all different faiths and places of worship to join in remembering that day.

There will also be a “dedication of the roads” for the three residents who died on 9/11.

The Sept. 11 Commemoration in Morgan Park will begin at 6:30 p.m. and last approximately 90 minutes. All residents and friends of Glen Cove are asked to join.
