Assemb. Charles Lavine, D-Glen Cove, joined other local State Assembly members to hear testimony on a bill proposing the legalization of medical marijuana in New York State at a public hearing Wednesday in Mineola.

The proposed Compassionate Care Act would create one of the nation’s most tightly regulated medical marijuana programs, according to the Drug Policy Alliance, allowing seriously ill patients access to a small amount of marijuana under the supervision of their healthcare provider.

A website dedicated to explaining issues surrounding proposed medical marijuana legalization under the Compassionate Care Act is available here. Read the full bill here.

The Assembly passed the bill with a bipartisan vote earlier this year, though the Senate did not take up the measure.

Lets cut to the chase people: Legalize it with minimal restrictions, because it's use is not addictive, users don't get violent and abusive like drunks do and it's effects are making the user mellow and sociable. Only health issue I see is possible lung damage from overuse. Only crime associated with weed is in its marketing: Robbing dealers of both pot and $$$ and ghetto dealers fighting over turf. Upside: frees up cops for real crime fighting, empties jails of pot smokers who never were a crime problem to begin with, thereby lowers taxes. Lock up real problems not some mellow pot head's.
