This Week in Glen Cove.

, D-Glen Cove, praised the new legislation introduced by Governor Cuomo that will create an independent redistricting commission.  For years, Lavine has co-sponsored legislation that would create a similar commission.  He also pledged his support for former New York City Mayor Ed Koch’s NY Uprising, which advocates independent redistricting.

“Fair elections can only be derived from districts in which all people are fairly represented,” Lavine said. “I encourage my colleagues in government to take up legislation calling for an independent redistricting commission.”

In other news, Lavine has agreed to introduce new legislation to allow Nassau County to install 50 additional red light cameras at dangerous intersections. A new report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows that red light cameras increase driver safety and save lives.  According to the study, the overall rate of fatal crashes declined by 24 percent in municipalities that have installed the devices, compared to those that still have not.
