Morgan Park Gazebo Takes Shape

Glen Cove landmark's roof was put on Wednesday.

Mayor Ralph Suozzi was all smiles Wednesday afternoon as he watched the city's historic gazebo rise in the spot it has occupied since 1932.

The roof was lifted and attached to the structure's new steel columns, which will prevent another collapse like the one in July.

"There's still a lot of work to be done," Suozzi said.

He expects the reconstruction will be finished by Christmas, though plastering of the inside may have to wait until the weather warms. That final touch will produce the echo the gazebo is known for.

The steel supports will be the only difference the new structure will have from the original. The city is using the gazebo's original blueprints for the reconstruction to ensure every detail is reproduced accurately.
