MTA: Fares Going up in March on LIRR

Across the board price increases approved; Glen Cove-area commuters to be affected.

If traveling by rail, be prepared to pay more in 2013.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority voted in December to raise its fares across the board, including a near-9 percent Long Island Rail Road hike set to impact Glen Cove-area commuters and travelers on March 1.

On average, most LIRR tickets will increase from 8.19 percent to 9.31 percent, depending on ticket type and zone, according to the MTA.

Costs will depend on distance traveled, time of day traveling and the type of ticket purchased, whether monthly, weekly, 10-trip, or one-way.

The LIRR announced it will establish discounts for military personnel on active duty and will extend to the evening peak period the Family Fare discount for children traveling with parents or guardians.

The discounted City Ticket, good for weekend transportation on the LIRR between Manhattan and Queens or between Brooklyn and Queens, will increase to $4 from $3.75 this year.

For those traveling by subway, the MTA announced it will bump the price of a one-way subway fare in New York City to $2.50, up from $2.25 a trip.

The MTA estimates Superstorm Sandy caused $268 million in lost revenue and additional operating costs in 2012 and will result in additional debt payments of as much as $62 million annually attributable to infrastructure losses not recovered from insurance or federal disaster relief.

I think the best course of action would be to contact any board member (their emails are listed) andRead More see what he or she has to say about it. That's one source that I would find reliable on this.
