New Police Hires Welcomed At Council Meeting

The Glen Cove Police Department's five newest members were introduced at the City Council meeting Tuesday; one has background in counter-terrorism.

The is five members closer to a full roster with the hiring of a group of officers, one who comes from the ranks of a New York Police Department counter-terrorism unit.

Peter Grella, James Manning, Paul Miceli, Jeffery Griggs and Andrew Mozer, all Glen Cove residents, were introduced at Tuesday's council meeting by Mayor Ralph Suozzi and Chief of Police William Whitton.

Manning, a graduate of Hunter College, joined the NYPD in 2006 and served in his capacity there until now. He can be put on patrol in as early as two weeks, according to the city.

The other four will join the department's ranks once they graduate from the police academy.

Grella is a graduate of the University of Maryland, Miceli graduated from Amherst College, Griggs from the University of Massachusetts and Mozer from St. John's University.

The hires bring the department's manpower to 87 percent of its recommended strength of 56, based on Department of Justice per capita guidelines.
