Photo of the Day: Crescent Beach Buoy

NYDEC placed buoy to mark 250 yard semi-circle diameter around the beach on Tuesday.

Officials from the state Department of Environmental Conservation to mark a 250 yard semi-circle diameter around Glen Cove's Crescent Beach to prevent shellfishing in contaminated waters.

The beach has been off limits to swimmers since June 2009 due to high bacteria levels in the water. The DEC re-opened about 2,500 acres of Hempstead Harbor to shellfish harvesting on June 1 after 40 years; but officials say the restricted area has been violated by some fishing boats.
