Poll: School District Split on Tax Levy

Glen Cove's school board is moving toward keeping tax levy close to two percent promised by state; could mean heavier cuts in programs.

The Glen Cove school board , with a 3-2 split between trustees weighing the effects of a higher levy against heavier cuts to school programs.

Superintendent Joseph Laria and several board members voiced frustration with the way the state's new two percent tax levy cap has been represented by politicians. They said the public has been led to believe the number is set in stone while it actually depends on a formula that brings Glen Cove's levy in at 2.38 percent, according to trustee Joel Sunshine.

Trustee Ida McQuair said the board is up against a problem of public perception, and that the board can't afford the risk of the budget not passing if a levy is chosen that is above the two percent cap people are expecting.
