Spinello Speaks on Glen Cove's Capital Budget, Upcoming Events
The following update was submitted to Patch by Mayor Reginald A. Spinello.
Capital Budget: Last month, the City Comptroller and I meet with all department heads regarding the 2014 capital needs. Our city has many infrastructure needs which much be addressed over the next few years. In order to best maximize the use of our dollars, the department heads and I have developed a priority list that will make the best use of taxpayer dollars while recognizing the need for limited capital borrowing. This “smart borrow” approach will allow us to purchase necessary equipment and begin capital repairs while helping to reduce our debt service payments for 2015.
Senior Day and Scoutapalooza: This Saturday, May 10 promises to be a busy, enjoyable day. At 9:00 a.m. be sure to visit Scoutapalooza at Pratt Park (adjacent to our firehouse). Scouts from Glen Cove will celebrate Scouting and Community Service. Events will feature Pinewood Derby races, Mentos Rockets, a Model Campsite, Knots/Lashing Stations, Craft Stations, Box Oven Cooking (baking in a standard cardboard box) and more. Community service will a big part of this event – used American Flags will be accepted for proper retirement, visitors will be able to help plant flowers in the park and at nearby locations, and food will be collected for distribution at a local food pantry. Representatives from Garvies Point will present informative displays and discussions on Scout programs available at the museum.

Glen Cove Senior Day events begin at 11 a.m. this Saturday in Village Square. There will be vendors, food, and information available all of which is geared to our senior citizens. This year, the Senior Day Committee has chosen Janina Jania to receive the Volunteer of the Year Award and Carolyn Willson to receive the Lifetime Achievement award. Receiving the Bob Howard Community Leadership Award is Assemblyman Charles Lavine. Receiving special recognition on Saturday will be our five centenarians: Charles Klein, Irene Mencuccina, Nadine Vorburger, Rose Paparillo, and Vincenza Giordano. I invite everyone to stop by and experience both of these great events.
Sgt.-Major Dan Daly Day, June 21: The US Marines are coming to Glen Cove! Please mark your calendars on June 21, at 9 a.m. for the re-dedication ceremony of the Sgt. Major Dan Daly tribute at our Monument Park. Following the ceremony, there will be a parade down Dosoris Lane led by a 30-member US Marine Corps Band from Camp Lejeune, and 300 Marines in full dress blues. The parade ends at the Glen Cove High School Maiden field where we can watch the inaugural Dan Daly Cup Lacrosse Game. As many of you may know, Sgt. Major Dan Daly was from Glen Cove and had the honor of receiving the Medal of Honor two times. Sgt. Major Daly is a US Marine legend whose bravery is catalogued in Marine Corps history. More details regarding June 21 will follow.

Booster Ball, DECA at the Senior Ball, and Select Chorale: Last Friday, I had the pleasure of attending the Booster Ball held by the Glen Cove High School Booster Club. Hat’s off to all the volunteers who worked on this great fundraiser to benefit our student athletes. On Saturday my wife and I attended the Senior Ball dance held at our Senior Center. Congratulations to the students in the Glen Cove High School DECA who did an outstanding job serving and assisting our senior citizens during the dance. On Monday night I presented the high school select chorale and director Ed Norris with pins commemorating the Chorale’s historic visit to the White House which was highlighted by a personal welcome by President and Mrs. Obama.
