Summer Youth Employment Program in Full Swing

This year the Glen Cove program features a public-private partnership.

The 2013 Summer Youth Employment Program is going strong, and continues to grow. For more than 30 years, the program, under the auspices of the City of Glen Cove Youth Bureau, has provided summer employment and training to residents ages 14-18.

The program's "green teams" are led by past program participants, Erika Ali and Albert Thurmond. They have been painting fire hydrants with the Water Department, cleaning Mill Pond with the Beautification Commission, working in the City’s Community Garden, maintaining the trails at Garvies Point Museum, assisting the Custodial Staff at Glen Cove High School, and folding clothes and organizing displays with the North Country Reform Temple for their annual yard sale.

The program has been able to provide 13 paid summer internships for 16-18 year olds.  To enrich the overall worker, the training program includes a health and wellness component in conjunction with job readiness skills training.  After four months of pre-program training, qualified applicants then interview for positions. To qualify for an interview, participants must have completed 20 workshops (40 hours of training), 20 community service hours, participated in a special event, and have a completed resume.

As every year passes, the SYEP expands and enhances.  In the past, it has worked solely with non-profits and city departments, with six interns working with the Youth Bureau, the Senior Center and the Adult Day Care Program. However, new this year is the first city-SYEP public-private partnership.

Five businesses have partnered with the Youth Bureau to provide employment opportunities to seven of workers.  Participating businesses include Third Generation Chiropractic, Gold Coast Business Services (formerly Mailboxes Etc.), Gold Martial Arts, Page One Restaurant (at Soundview), and Green Forest Veterinary.

For more information about the program, call Jacki Yonick, Youth Employment Coordinator at 516.671.4600.  Inquiries to work for Summer 2014 should be made in January 2014.
