Swearing-in Ceremony for Glen Cove Harbor Patrol

Members of the reorganized Glen Cove Harbor Patrol were sworn in by Mayor Reginald Spinello at the July 22 City Council meeting. 

The ceremony also recognized the retirement of the Harbor Patrol badge worn by Rick Douglas, an active and dedicated member of the patrol who recently died.

The city’s Harbor Patrol oversees the safety of recreational boaters and anglers on the waters surrounding Glen Cove. Responsibilities include watching for anyone operating a boat recklessly or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Part of the Harbor Patrol’s community outreach is to emphasize the potentially life-saving importance of wearing life jackets while boating. Other outreach includes raising awareness for that boat operators must be aware of the maximum person capacity on their vessel. 

In addition the outreach includes and reminding everyone that communication devices are one of the most important items on a boat in case of emergency; it can be a cell phone or VHF radio, or personal locator beacon.
