TOBAY Dune Stabilization Project is Saturday

The Town's last dune stabilization project was in March 2012; it was postponed in 2013 due to damage from Hurricane Sandy.

Beach lovers, take note: Residents are invited to help preserve TOBAY Beach on Saturday, at 10 a.m.

That’s when Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto and other officials, work crews and concerned individuals will participate in the annual Tobay Beach Dune Stabilization Project.  It’s the first dune stabilization project at Tobay since Hurricane Sandy.

Supervisor Venditto called the event as “vital not only for our environmental preservation efforts here in the Town, but also an excellent opportunity for community groups and volunteers to pitch in and give back.”

“Last year’s event, which was to be the 25th annual, unfortunately was cancelled as a result of the unprecedented devastation brought about by Hurricane Sandy,” he said in a press release. “As I promised last year when I had to make the tough decision to cancel this project, this storm is something that this Town would come back from, and I am proud to say that Tobay beach, including the entirety of its dunes and facilities, have been restored to its former glory.”

These kinds of projects are key for to preserving the beach, officials say. For example, planting grass helps to stabilize and enlarge our dunes, assisting in providing a natural barrier against storm surge and high winds, as well as protecting the delicate ecosystem of the surrounding areas.
