Town of Oyster Bay residents will only have one more chance to get rid of hazardous, and electronic household waste in 2012. They'll also be collecting unused medications.
They will hold their eighth and final collection day will be held on Nov. 4 at the town's solid waste disposal complex in Syosset. It's located at 150 Miller Place off the north service road of the L.I.E.
It runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The town's S.T.O.P., or Stop Throwing Out Pollutants program, is in its twenty-seventh year, while the electronic waste program is in it's ninth year. They've been collecting medications since 2010.
Among the items you can for the S.T.O.P. Collection are:
- Oil-based & latex paints
- Brake & transmission fluids
- Drain & oven cleaners
- Spot removers
- Automobile tires (with or without rims)
- Small aerosol cans
- Outdoor gas grill propane tanks
- Compact fluorescent bulbs
- Thermostats
- Waste motor oil & antifreeze
- Solvents
- Most pesticides & insecticides
- Photo chemicals
- Wood preservatives
- Automobile batteries
- Rechargeable and button batteries
You are not allowed to bring the following items.
- Kepone
- Explosives*, fireworks
- Radioactive materials
- Infectious materials(medical waste)
- Unlabeled materials (unless identifiable by our contractor)
The following electronic items can be brought to the collection.
- Computers & computer monitors
- Small scale servers
- Cathode ray tubes
- Hard drives
- Laptops
- Electronic or video game consoles
- Digital cameras
- Electronic keyboards
- Portable digital music players
- Telephones
- Cell phones
- Televisions & cable/satellite receivers
- Digital video recorders
- Digital converter boxes
- Stereos, speakers & radio equipment
- Electronic mice or similar pointing devices
- VCR’s & DVD’s
- Microwave ovens
- Computer peripherals & small electronic equipment (including any cable, cord, or wiring permanently affixed to or incorporated into the computer peripheral or small electronic equipment.)
- Copiers, fax machines, printers and scanners (only those intended for use with a computer and weighing less than 100 lbs.)
