Here's something good that came out of Hurricane Sandy:
The Town of Oyster Bay is offering residents and businesses free, double-ground mulch, available at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa.
“Hurricane Sandy brought down many trees, not to mention countless limbs, all across the Town,” said Supervisor John Venditto. “Rather than ship the wood as garbage, the Town decided to recycle the wood by turning it into mulch and making it available to residents for their home gardening projects.”

The mulch is "double ground," making it comparable to landscaping standards, town officials said. Businesses are also welcome to the supply.
“Mulching is one of the simplest and most beneficial practices you can use in the garden,” Venditto said. “Organic mulch, such as that made from trees, improves the condition of the soil. As the mulch slowly decomposes, it provides organic matter which helps keep the soil loose."
The mulch will be available Monday through Friday at John J. Burns Town Park, Merrick Road in Massapequa, between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents and commercial vehicles will be permitted to pull up to the work area, located at the back of the park. Business patrons will be asked to fill out a waiver prior to filling mulch.
