Town of Oyster Bay crews have been working around the clock to prepare for Snowstorm Hercules, expected to blanket Long Island in up to 10 inches of snow by Friday.

The Town has 83 trucks to distribute a sand and salt mixture on the roads as well as up to 275 snowplows at the ready, said Marta Kane, a town spokeswoman. Though predictions are serious, the town has not declared a snow emergency.

"We're watching the weather closely," she said. "It's our understanding that the blizzard warning is beginning this evening through early tomorrow or mid morning with snow possibly continuing after the blizzard warning is over. We're ready, we've dealt with simpler snow storms and worse snowstorms."

Due to the anticipated severity of the blizzard, the Town has canceled Friday's sanitation and recycling collection. Collection will take place on the next regular pick up day.

All Town programs and activities are canceled until further notice. Both community centers will be closed Friday, ice rinks may reopen later in the day.

Visit www.oysterbaytown.com for updated information or call the Town's 24 hour emergency hotline at 516-677-5757.

Bummed that there is no sign of a snow plow on Glen Cove Road downtown since well, haven't seen one yet.

I take it that those who complained about using the robo call system, no longer object to it? On the plow issue, I'm surprised GCR has not been plowed, my very out of the way cul de sac has been

Very surprised and disappointed. Been watching out the window since 3am. No sand, no salt, no plows. No idea about robo calls..shouldn't need one for the only thoroughfare into downtown.
