The Town of Oyster Bay is participating in a 2013 Soldier Collection Drive in an effort to gather needed supplies to be sent to the men and women serving around the globe.
The list itself tells a story: items we take for granted here are craved by men and women in uniform. They include deodorant and cereal, feminine products and empty shoe boxes. Gummi bears and lollipops made the list.
The town is asking residents to help support the drive, now its sixth year in Oyster Bay. The drive continues until mid-March.
“Last year, Town residents, with the assistance of the CSEA, donated more than 2,000 pounds of much-needed supplies,” said Councilman Anthony Macagnone. “This year, with residents’ support, we hope to surpass that amount.”
Anyone interested in donating to the collection drive may drop off items at:
- Town Hall North in Oyster Bay;
- Department of Public Works (CSEA entrance) in Syosset;
- Town Hall South in Massapequa
- Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center at Bethpage Community Park.
The collection drive will end on Friday, March 15.
The list of items needed is as poignant as they are vital. They include:
- Antibiotic & Cortisone ointments, Visine, Pepto Bismol tablets, Tylenol/Advil, Bandaids Deodorant, Powder, Mach 3 razors,
- White Socks, Athletic T-shirts (black or brown only)
- Beef jerky, Peanut Butter, Microwave pastas & soups, GNC Protein shakes, cereal, Tuna fish (pre-mixed packets) no cans, nuts.
- Gummi bears, Lollipops/ Hard candy/ Mints, mouthwash
- Chapstick, body wash, feminine products, baby wipes.
- Empty Shoe Boxes.
- “I believe it is critical that we do our part to boost the morale of our soldiers,” Councilman Macagnone said. “This program serves as an important reminder to our uniformed service personnel that the daily sacrifices they make are not taken for granted."
