Oyster Bay residents are being urged to use extra caution this boating season when out in the waters, especially following the events of Hurricane Sandy.

“The events of Sandy left massive destruction in its wake, both on land and in our waterways,” said Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Pinto. “All boaters should take extra caution when traversing this spring and summer season.”

The Councilman is asking boaters, residents on the waterfront, or anyone who spots debris in the water to call the Town of Oyster Bay’s Public Safety Department at 677-5350, so that the Town may come and remove the debris located within its jurisdiction.

Town issues alert on grilling dangers

Residents are reminded to use proper safety procedures when cooking outside.

“There are many reasons why grilling outdoors is so popular," said Oyster Bay Town Councilman Chris Coschignano. "However, I also remind our residents to make sure they follow proper safety guidelines when using their grills.”

The town issued these guidelines:

  • Only use grills outdoors away from buildings and in a well-ventilated location.
  • Never store propane cylinders inside of homes.
  • When transporting a propane cylinder, make sure it is always in an upright position.
  • Make sure that a grill is turned off when not being used.  A grill should be stored in an area where children do not have access it to it, when not being used.
  • Never leave a lit grill unattended.
  • Use long utensils to avoid burning oneself and wear short or tight fitting sleeves when cooking on a grill or open-flame.
  • Charcoal grills can be just as hazardous as propane grills. Use extreme caution when lighting charcoal, especially when using lighter fluid and follow all instructions.
