2 Intel Semifinalists Named from North Shore

Students were picked from more than 1,800 submissions.

Two students from the North Shore School District were named Intel Semifinalists for 2012. 

The students named semifinalists are:

  • David Davani, 17, North Shore High School
  • Lily Fagin, 17, North Shore High School

Davani was awarded for his project entitled: 1-a,25 Dihydroxyvitamin D3 Modifies TNF-ALPHA Induced Proliferation and Migration in Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells from Wystar Kyoto and Diabetic Goto-Kakazaki Rats.

Fagin’s project, called “Willful Ignorance: The Tendancy to Make Incentive-Compatible Decisions in Ambiguous Environments,” garnered her the prestigious award, as well.

Each student will receive $1,000 for his or her in-depth research. To recognize excellence in teaching and school support of individual student research, North Shore High School will also receive $1,000 per semifinalist.

The Intel Science Talent Search is a program of Society for Science & the Public and is one of the most prestigious science research competitions for high school seniors.

More than 1,800 students submitted projects to the competition, and 300 semifinalists were named.

From this group of semifinalists, 40 will be chosen to attend the Intel Science Talent Institute in Washington, D.C. from March 8-13. During this trip, finalists will undergo further judging and share $630,000 in awards.

The 40 finalists will be announced Jan. 25 and published in Science News.
