Additional Cameras, Increased Police Presence Proposed for GC Schools

Additional security measures include "door ajar" notification systems and swipe card access.

The Glen Cove School District has installed video intercoms and updated and added additional DVR/NVR’s [Network Video Recorders] in all buildings with additional cameras to follow, according to a letter recently sent to district parents from the BOE and Superintendent Maria Rianna.

“Door ajar” notification system hardware installation was also recently completed at the middle school and will be added at the high school and elementary schools. Swipe card access has also been installed in certain locations to insure entrants into those areas are appropriate and recorded.

The Glen Cove Police have also offered to increase police presence in the schools, according to the letter.

"In a minimally invasive manner, police would touch base with the school administrator(s) and peruse our parking lots on a regular basis," the letter reads.  "The Glen Cove Police Department is already involved in many positive activities throughout the school year in our buildings, and this added measure would enhance their presence while not interrupting the daily course of instruction and building routine."

The letter said the increased security measures are intended to prevent a tragedy such as the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting. To read the entire letter visit the Glen Cove School District website here
