An Inside Look at the High School Music Department

Students with an interest in the musical arts are encouraged to pursue their goals at Glen Cove High School.

The winter concert is set for Dec. 15, and bittersweet emotions are running high for seniors, as it will be their final holiday performance on the high school stage.

You may have noticed the Glen Cove wind ensemble, along with the concert band, sitting in the stands during home football games this season; but even though football season has long since ended, the band plays on.

Rotating lessons for specific instruments are held on a daily basis in order to ensure that each individual part is up to par for the December concert.

Director Jim Reardon recently announced that the New York Islanders have requested that the wind ensemble perform our notorious pep band songs, including classics such as "Gonna Fly Now" from "Rocky," "NFL on Fox" and "Notre Dame," during a hockey game next month. Band members are ecstatic.

On Monday, Nov. 22, the Glen Cove Select Chorale performed at a , during which veteran Mr. Joseph Cunningham was commended by the city for his service to his country as well as the community. It was a devout, heartfelt ceremony to say the least, and the chorale was beyond excited to have the honor of singing the National Anthem, as well as a distinct rendition of "God Bless America."

Soloist Leilani D'Onfrio also did a magnificent job performing "God Bless the USA" for Mr. Cunningham.

Overall, the chorale has been working hard to perfect their musical selections, as they will be participating in a chorale competition in Virginia Beach this April.

On another music department, talented musicians from both the band and the chorale may choose to perform a NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) solo to receive a grade on their performance. Students should talk to Mr. Norris or Mr. Reardon if they feel this is something they would be interested in participating in.

Finally, MPAPA (Music and Performing Arts Parent Assocation) will be awarding a sum of money to the winner(s) of their annual scholarship aimed toward prospective college students looking to expand their knowledge of music or performing arts. MPAPA has always been a fundamental component of the Glen Cove music department, as they consistently fundraise and work hard in order to ensure that students with an interest in the fine arts can effortlessly pursue their dreams.

Make sure to come out to on Dec. 15 to see what those involved in these musical courses are truly capable of.
