Budget Passes; Sunshine, Dratch Elected

Spending in $72 million Glen Cove school budget expected to increase 2.4 percent over previous year.

Glen Cove voters passed a on Tuesday for the 2011-12 school year while electing incumbent  and newcomer. Each ran unopposed for two seats on the school board. 

With a final budget vote tally of 1,023 to 578, homeowners within the Glen Cove School district can expect to see a 3.3  percent increase in their collective tax levy in the following year. 

Sunshine received a total of 1,030 votes and Dratch was elected with 675.

"We thank district residents for their vote of confidence in approving the budget," said Superintendent Dr. Joseph Laria. "We believe that the budget is educationally sound and fiscally responsible. District residents reaffirmed that belief. We are grateful for their support as we work together to preserve Glen Cove’s tradition of quality and to insure a future of excellence.

Laria had been preparing the community for a grim budget year: “I can say to you in all sincerity, in my 32 years of experience in dealing with budgets, I have never experienced what we are about to experience,” he said.

The district eliminated 19 positions to cut costs, resulting in 11 teacher layoffs.

Voting took place at the auditorium lobby of , , ,  from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.
