Students Create Visual Earth Message

Glen Cove High artists design sculpture for school yard.

Towards the end of the 2009-10 school year, Glen Cove High School Principal Keith Schenker commissioned Parisa Taheri, Emily Natale and Ronnie Rant — all students in Mrs. Kathleen Wright's Advanced Visual Arts class — to design a sculpture for the school courtyard that would include recycling cans.

After a few months of preparation and construction assistance from head custodian Ralph DiMaggio, the students created an original 8-foot tall sculpture, which incorporates organic lines to simulate seaweed found in the sea, and they cut-up cans and Snapple bottle caps containing messages implying that garbage can be recycled into beautiful secondary products.

"This magnificent artistic sculpture represents our students' concerted and collaborative efforts to use art to make a statement about the world they live in," said Nomi Rosen, the Glen Cove District's Fine Arts Coordinator.
