Connolly Kids Make Rainforest Museum

Fifth-graders create exhibit featuring art, information and live animals; project reflects new direction under Common Core Standards.

Connolly Elementary School's library was transformed last week into an exhibit on rainforests replete with artwork, lists of facts and a few live animals.

Valarie Scicchitano's grade 5 students combined their knowledge of art, science, English Language Arts and math for the project, which the district said is a product of new directives for public schools.

"The exercise reflects the type of interdisciplinary, hands-on projects recommended with the new Common Core Standards," the district said.

Third- and fourth-grade students toured the completed exhibit.
