District Adds Elementary School Class Section

Former teachers were rehired as a result of growing class sizes.

The Glen Cove School District has modified class sections in response to the growing number of elementary students.

One first grade class section was added at Deasy Elementary School, and an extra reading teacher was hired at Gribbin Elementary School, according to Superintendent Dr. Joseph Laria at Monday night's BOE meeting.

Steven Mahalic and Nicole Crumlich—both former district employees who were let go as a result of the recent budget cuts—have been recalled to fill the positions.

The district did not specify the teachers' respective positions.

"The added reading teacher will balance out the number of students to a teacher," said Laria.

The Superintendent and BOE have been monitoring the growing class sizes in grades K-2 since the issue was first discussed at a July meeting.

According to Laria, with two weeks left until the schools open, the district will continue to monitor class sizes every week, and more sections will be added if the number of enrollments continue to increase.

"We are in good shape," said Laria. "We will certainly make adjustments accordingly if there are any blips on the screen."
