District Agrees to Fund Student's Art Program

The BOE provides resources for Shania Wilcox to attend performing arts program.

Shania Wilcox will attend the BOCES Cultural Arts Center this year, according to Superintendent Dr. Joseph Laria.

"She's all systems go," said Laria on Friday morning. "The family is now aware, and the Board and I are happy to accommodate her. Our schools are very much in support of the arts."

The 11th grader and her family fought the BOE after a budget was passed that excluded financial support for the BOCES arts program. Wilcox's mother and sister collected over 150 petition signatures of other Glen Cove residents in support of Shania and the arts.

"Shania is well-known in the community for her talent in musical theater," said her mother Loretta Wilcox. "A lot of people love and support her."

"It's a great opportunity to perfect her skills," said Shania's sister Cheron Jackson, an alumnus of the program.
