Long Island Small Farm Summit
The 2011 Small Farm Summit, scheduled for Friday, April 15th, will feature a keynote address from Joel Salatin, nationally known speaker and writer and self-described “environmentalist capitalist lunatic farmer.” Dubbed by the New York Times “the high priest of the pasture,” Salatin’s innovative farming methods have attracted the attention of the agriculture community across the nation. He is featured prominently in Michael Pollan’s book The Omnivore's Dilemma as well as in the documentary films Food, Inc. and Fresh.
The interactive workshops that continue throughout the day will cover a wide range of topics related to sustainable agriculture, education, and food equity. Panels of experts, organizers, and practitioners will offer their knowledge and help to stimulate discussion. The conference will also include a networking lunch, a series of exhibits, and a closing session to aid in turning the ideas of the day into next steps toward supporting an active and sustainable local farming community.
