Glen Cove Falls in Semifinal

Plainedge defeats Big Red 34-27.

Glen Cove's winning streak came to an end Friday when Plainedge managed to push past Big Red in the Nassau Conference III football semifinal.

Plainedge quarterback Nick Frenger led the third seeded Red Devils to a 34-27 victory at Hofstra's Shuart Stadium.

Plainedge gained an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter with a touchdown by Nick Cupolo after a 51-yard run. Ryan Perkins answered for Glen Cove with 38 yards into the end zone to tie it, earning Perkins his 12th touchdown of the year.

Plainedge made it 14-7 before the second quarter's end. Glen Cove quarterback Will Kassar rushed for 88 yards to score, making it 14-13.

Kassar connected a long pass in the third quarter for a touchdown, and a missed extra point put Glen Cove ahead 14-19 going into halftime.

Plainedge got the only score of the third quarter, squeezing ahead 20-19. Glen Cove regained the lead in the fourth with another touchdown from Will Kassar, with an extra point to make it 20-27.

Plainedge tied things up again with a touchdown. Glen Cove suffered a turnover that turned into another Plainview touchdown with 3:40 left in the game.

Big Red didn't make it to the end zone before the clock ran out, bringing the team's eight-game winning streak and season to a close.
