Glen Cove HS Takes Stand Against Smoking Ads

In conjunction with the Tobacco Action Coalition of Long Island and Glen Cove PRIDE Project Coalition, students at Glen Cove High School took a stand against smoking on Thursday, Nov. 21, which is the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smoke Out Day.

Coordinated by Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics Denise Kiernan and teacher Tony Gallo, Glen Cove students signed and wrote brief messages on advocacy cards that read “We’ve Seen Enough.”

The cards, which were posted on the high school walls for all to see, document their displeasure with tobacco marketing in stores, specifically the industry’s efforts to court young smokers. Students also pledged to lead a tobacco-free lifestyle and to inspire their friends and families to do the same.

Glen Cove Mayor Ralph Souzzi and Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton stopped by to congratulate the Tobacco Action Coalition, Glen Cove PRIDE and high school officials and students for their efforts.

The cards were posted in the high school student commons area, where coalition representatives were available to speak with students. Literature and an informative video were also on display.
