Glen Cove Notebook: Boys & Girls Club College Tour, Points of Pride

Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club members get a taste of college life; Children from Glen Cove Schools receive awards; Beautification Commission hosts Inter-Coastal Beach Cleanup.

at Lincoln House partnered with Taco Bell Foundation for Teens to bring Club members to college campuses, exposing them to college life and inspiring their future plans.

This year’s first College Tour took Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club members to LaSalle University, Temple University, Drexel University and Princeton University. The three-day, two-night College Tour was introduced to ten Summer Youth Employees and Club members ages 15 to 18.

The idea behind the Tour was to help teenage students begin to think about their future goals, career paths and their current education experience, according to a Boys & Girls Club news release.

“This was an excellent way to show them that there are a number of different schools out there and there is one for them,” said Teen Program Director Antoinette Edmonston. “We instill in all our members that graduating high school is one way to move towards their post high school goals.”

  • : Fifth grader Leah Dwyer wrote the winning essay as part of Astoria Federal Bank in Glen Cove’s Teach Children to Save Celebration. The theme of her essay was "Saving for the Future.”
  • : First grade teacher Giselle Taylor submitted a proposal to the Long Island Technology Summit and was invited to present at the Summit on Oct. 18. She will be presenting her students “Making Public Service Announcements Using iMovie.”

    Gribbin’s Fine Arts Festival from May was featured for a week on “My LI TV,” said Principal Francine Santoro.
  • : Eighth grader Kai Williams recently completed the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Program. The center offers a three-week summer camp of challenging, higher-level programs for gifted learners in Humanities, Math and Science, according to a news release.

Beautification Commission Hosts Annual Inter-Coastal Beach Cleanup

The Glen Cove Beautification Commission hosted the annual Inter-Coastal Beach Cleanup Saturday, Sept. 17.

Beautification members, including guest volunteer Kendra Sawyer, turned out to pick up, bag and record all sorts of litter along the coast of .

Food wrappings, plastic bottles, tobacco products and packing pellets were among items found; a total of 60 pounds of trash was collected, according to a news release.  

Volunteers inventoried all of the litter they collected on data cards provided by the American Littoral Society. The information will be forwarded to the Ocean Conservancy in Washington, D.C., and the organization will use it to report on the status of waterways worldwide.

“I would like to thank all of the volunteers who took the time to do their part in this effort to cleanup our beaches,” said Beautification Supervisor Damion Stavredes.
