Glen Cove School Budget Passes by Slim Margin

Recount to be held.

Glen Cove voters approved by a very slim margin a nearly $77 million budget on Tuesday for the 2013-14 school year.

With a final tally of 799-779 in favor, residents within the Glen Cove School District can expect to see a 2.42 percent increase in their collective tax levy in the following year. The budget falls within the tax levy capital limit of 3.53 percent.

Three candidates – Grady FarnanRichard Maccarone and Eric Bailey – vied for two available seats as school board trustees.  Maccarone and Farnan were elected. Maccarone received 1,050 votes, Farnan received 859 votes and Bailey received 832.

But because of the slim margins, both for the budget and the school board election, the board announced after seeking legal counsel that it will hold a recount. The board expects to have results of the recount within several days. However, the results announced Tuesday evening stand unless there is a discrepancy following the recount.

Voting took place Tuesday, from 7 a.m.-9 p.m., at Finley Middle School on Forest Avenue, Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club on Glen Cove Avenue, Landing School on McLoughlin Street, and Connolly School on Ridge Drive.
