Glen Cove Schools Closed Wed, Garbage Pickup Suspended

District's phone lines down as much of city remains without power; mayor's office says 7-10 days projected for return to power.

Glen Cove City Schools will remain closed Wednesday as the city copes with widespread power outages and considerable tree damage.

An automated district phonecall notified teachers and parents Tuesday that schools will not be open Wednesday, according to the mayor's office.

Garbage pickups have been postponed as well, and will resume Thursday, the city said.

Downed trees have multiple roads closed throughout Glen Cove. Dosoris Lane at Forest Ave. was blocked off as of 3 p.m. due to a large tree near Deasy Elementary School resting on power lines over the roadway.

Traffic lights downtown were operational, but those around the rest of the city were out as of Tuesday afternoon.

Mayor Ralph Suozzi was sitting in his SUV with its emergency lights on near a downed power line on Harrison Ave. Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. He said he was waiting to meet with Long Island Power Authority officials at 4 p.m.

His office said power restoration could take from seven to 10 days, according to the latest information from LIPA, as many substations are down and need to be fixed before local restoration can take place.
