Laria Named as Interim Superintendent

Glen Cove BOE hires temporary schools chief for 2010-11 academic year.

The Glen Cove Board of Education appointed Dr. Joseph A. Laria as the district's interim superintendent for the 2010-11 school year Monday, ending weeks of speculation about who would replace Superintendent Dr. Laurence Aronstein next year.

Laria, school officials said, has more than 40 years of experience in education, which includes 31 years of work as a superintendent for six school districts in the state. Laria also previously served as the acting superintendent for the Riverhead, North Babylon and Hempstead school districts.

"I want to thank the Glen Cove Board of Education for the vote of confidence and I pledge that I will not break faith with that confidence as [the board] intends to move the district forward in a very positive and dynamic way," Laria said. "The word interim doesn't exist in my vernacular ... to me, it's educational leader, and that's my commitment to the children, families and school board of Glen Cove."

Aronstein, who has served as the district's schools chief since 2005, announced that he will retire at the end of this school year in March. His contract was slated to expire in 2012.

I think the best course of action would be to contact any board member (their emails are listed) andRead More see what he or she has to say about it. That's one source that I would find reliable on this.
