North Shore High School Students Tour Water Facility

Great Neck Water Pollution Control District hosted educational trip.

A group of North Shore High School students toured the Great Neck Water Pollution Control District facility recently, learning how the water supply is managed and what the district is doing to reduce toxic effects on the environment.

“Our ongoing commitment and dedication to community outreach and education are reflected through the many tours we hold for local students and organizations,” said a statement from district superintendent Christopher Murphy. “We are pleased to educate student groups about the complexities of the wastewater treatment process and the environmentally-friendly initiatives that are currently taking place at the district.”

Students were given a presentation on the district's background and day-to-day operations.

Murphy then led the students around the facility as he explained the workings of an "innovative" Biofuel station, an ultraviolet disinfection system and a recently completed oxidation ditch "that will decrease the GNWPCD’s environmental impact," according to a statement.

He also told the group about the district's ongoing upgrade construction project.
