Reading is Out of This World

Schools throughout the Glen Cove School District are celebrating the PTA-sponsored Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) initiative during the month of January. As part of the annual two-week national celebration, elementary schools in Glen Cove are encouraging parents to read with their children for at least fifteen minutes daily, stressing the fact that reading can be fun as well as informative. 

Schools conduct their own “Community Readers Day,” as volunteer readers from throughout Glen Cove visit elementary classrooms to read to students and reinforce that reading is the single most important activity in a young child’s education.

Two Glen Cove elementary school students can be proud of the fact that their creative talents played an integral role in promoting the PARP celebration. As part of an annual PARP tradition in the district, fifth graders Kylie Paul of Connolly School and Miranda Matteo of Landing School each designed their own logo that was selected by the district PARP committee to serve as the official design for the PARP program, following the theme “Reading is Out of This World.” 

Both students were awarded certificates from the committee and were congratulated by their respective principals and teachers. Studies show that children who read at home are better prepared to succeed in formal education. The Glen Cove School District encourages all parents to find time to read with their children regularly, not just during PARP.
