School Board Votes to Protect Members on Lawsuit

Assistant superintendent challenges tenure withdrawal.

The Glen Cove school board voted Thursday to provide a legal defense and indemnify its members arising from a lawsuit filed against the board by Assistant Superintendent Shari Camhi.

Attorney Neil M. Block, partner in the law firm Ingerman Smith LLP,  said the board’s unanimous 7-0 vote was in support of resolutions protecting its members as individuals.

Block said the district had previously revoked Camhi’s tenure and that her lawsuit filed in State Supreme Court in Nassau County was a challenge to that action.

Camhi, the assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and technology, could not be reached immediately for comment.

Thursday's board meeting lasted just a few minutes, though preceded by an executive session.

According to minutes from its July 6 meeting (see attached), the board revoked the tenure granted assistant superintendent Kevin Wurtz and Camhi, citing a state law that only permits contracts, not tenure, for assistant or deputy superintendents in city school districts. Both Camhi, who was originally granted tenure in 2008, and Wurtz, who won tenure in 2007, were then awarded one-year contracts, which expire July 5.
