Student Reporters Win Awards

Cove-er Times recognized in four categories at Adelphi University's Press Day 2013.

Glen Cove High School's newspaper received awards in four of six categories it entered at Adelphi University's Press Day 2013 last month, according to the Glen Cove School District.

The annual event is designed to recognize high school journalists from Nassau and Suffolk Counties. This year, 330 students from 33 schools participated.

  • Best Opinion Piece: silver/second place - Matt Kolbert
  • Best Arts Review: silver/second place - Natasha Miller
  • Best Photo: silver/second place - Konrad Backiel
  • Best Online Newspaper: honorable mention - co-editors-in-chief Matt Kolbert and Yaqarah LeTellier

"Cove-er Times was one of only a few school publications to garner this many awards at Adelphi," according to the district.

This is the second time Kolbert has been honored this year. He received second place in the commentary/editorial category at C.W. Post Media Arts Awards in March for the piece he was honored for at Adelphi.

Kolbert's editorial discussed social media and technology's effect on the 2012 presidential election. He examined the effectiveness of the Obama campaign’s “Narwhal” project over the Romney camp’s “ORCA” effort to reach targeted voter demographics.
