Schools

Tonight's The Knight

Senior year gradually continues, and with only one full week completed, preparation for homecoming is already chaotic.

Your success is our top priority; I'd love to see you apply to our school; Our application is open, apply now!

As our e-mail inbox fills up with these subject lines, everyday it seems more and more preposterous to overestimate the amount of time left to complete college applications.

For students who have yet to take their SAT's, or were not content with their original scores, the next opportunity at Glen Cove High School will be on Oct. 9.

Upon hearing this date, it typically takes a few seconds for the student to think that this date sounds strangely familiar; and then it clicks: it is the morning of Homecoming day.

While students were initially outraged by this schedule mishap, the dates have been set, and we have accepted the fact that despite minor potential chaos, it is what it is; we continue to remain hopeful that this weekend won't be anywhere near as stressful as expected.

The official 2010 Homecoming slogan has finally been announced at the Sept. 15 PTSA meeting held in the High School cafeteria. Student Senate president, Lorena Silva, and I discussed what our group is all about and what it is that we do, including preparing for and managing Homecoming and the week preceding.

Since the Glen Cove varsity football team is playing the Levittown Blue Dragons, our finalized slogan has been chosen to read: "Tonight's the Knight, Destroy the Dragons."

Ideas are currently being formulated regarding the annual pregame float, which will actually be built at my house this year.

Not only do students eagerly anticipate the Saturday of Homecoming itself, but in addition, the exciting five days prior known as "Spirit Week." Each day of this week has it's own theme, during which Glen Cove students show their school pride by dressing up and building adrenaline for the upcoming weekend. This year, we have chosen to utilize the following themes: twin day, crazy dress up day, change your image day, blast from the past day, and the annual Spirit day, which means that every class will wear their own unique color to demonstrate class pride.

An event planned for the night of pep rally has been pitched, but since it is not definite, details can not be revealed. I can, however, say that it involves the student body, a Friday night outside, and a big blue dragon.

This year, the Red Army, created by Glen Cove alumni Adam Ramadan, continues to enthusiastically cheer on Big Red whether its a weeknight at the school, or a Friday night somewhere 30 minutes away. While a number of former members have graduated and moved on to college, students continue to show their support by wearing the now notorious red shirts and cheering loudly for the team.

School spirit appears to be reaching a new level this year. As seniors, my class wants nothing more than to make the best of the time we have left. Based on the first full week of classes, I can confidently say that we are indubitably doing just that.
