Video: District's Digital Photography Program in High Demand

In light of the upcoming budget vote, Glen Cove High School Students voiced concern over the future of the district's art programs.

While in four days, residents will vote for or against this year's Glen Cove school budget of $72 million, students, teachers and community members are concerned about the future of the district's art programs.

Tina Mazzarrella – owner of restaurant in Glen Cove – and Melissa Manzione, teacher of Digital Photography at the GCHS, hosted a reception on April 29, highlighting the artwork of student Christine Adams.

During the reception, students voiced their concern over the future of the photography program.

The Glen Cove BOE adopted a $72 million budget on April 11 which calls for an increase of 2.4 percent.

Still, because of skyrocketing increases in mandated operating costs, the school board has placed a long line of programs considered "on the table" – meaning they can face cuts.

Manzione says her program has been considered "on the table" for potential cuts.

"Having these classes available to them [students] is such a wonderful thing, not just because it makes them well-rounded, but it is a serious career option," said Manzione. "Creative arts are so important in the world right now, and it's really important to embrace what we do offer the kids at ."

Manzione said that enrollment in the digital photography program has been strong.
