Voters to Decide Budget, 3 School Board Members Tuesday

Spending plan calls for tax increase below the state's 'tax cap.'

Voters in the Glen Cove School District go to the polls on Tuesday to determine whether to approve the 2013-14 budget. Voters will also elect two of three candidates on the ballot to serve three-year terms on the Board of Education.

On the ballot are incumbent and Board vice president Grady Farnan, former board president Richard Maccarone and Eric Bailey, a parent and candidate during last year's election.

The proposed budget of $76,670,632 represents a 3.47 percent increase over last year’s spending. The tax levy increase is 2.42 percent, which is below the state’s “tax cap,” which this year was configured for Glen Cove at 3.53 percent.

New York State has a complex formula that is applied district by district, which allows tax levies to exceed the 2 percent figure.

Polls are open Tuesday, from 7 a.m.-9 p.m., at Finley Middle School on Forest Avenue, Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club on Glen Cove Avenue, Landing School on McLoughlin Street, and Connolly School on Ridge Drive.
