A recap of recent news in Glen Cove

Here is your weekly summary of the latest news in Glen Cove: 

The Glen Cove School District presented its preliminary budget for the 2010-11 academic year on Monday, which called for an increase of $2.2 million in spending over the current year. The Glen Cove Board of Education will continue its budget revisions and discussions at its meeting on March 8 at the Robert M. Finely Middle School. The public vote on the budget, which is the district's annual spending plan, will be held on May 18. 

That same day, Glen Cove resident William Diaz, 42, was arrested for cocaine possession after he helped transport a shooting victim in Hempstead to a nearby hospital. Diaz has been charged with two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance and was arraigned at the First District Court in Hempstead on Feb. 25.

On Friday, Long Island was hit with another nor'easter, which blasted the city with more than a foot of snow. Kids in the city had another day off from school and city sanitation workers spent the day plowing the streets.

Anthony Tripp, chief of the city's fire department, also urged residents that day to always shovel out fire hydrants near their properties to help prevent delays in the department's service during an emergency. The city currently has 450 hydrants.
