A recap of the latest news in Glen Cove.

Just in case you missed Patch's coverage this week, here is a recap of some of the latest news in Glen Cove:

The Glen Cove Board of Education had a busy meeting on Monday night, with several big announcements. Administrators presented the second draft of the district's 2010-11 preliminary budget, which called for a $71.4 million spending plan. The latest figure is an estimated $180,000 decrease from the first draft.

Superintendent Dr. Laurence Aronstein also presented a proposal for a complete honors program at the Robert M. Finely Middle School. School officials said the program would provide sixth, seventh and eighth grade students with accelerated instruction in English, math, science and social studies. The middle school currently offers honors classes in those subjects for students in seventh and eighth grade only.

Aronstein also announced that he will retire in June, which will mark the end of his 46-year tenure as a professional educator. He has served as the district's superintendent since 2005. The board did not announce when it will begin its search for a new schools chief.

During the Glen Cove City Council's meeting on Wednesday, the board tabled its vote to select a bidder to construct the Glen Cove Ferry Terminal until its next meeting on March 23. The vote will enable the city to become a step closer to bringing its Waterfront Project to fruition.

The week ended unpleasantly for many residents as they had to endure power outages and more yesterday after Long Island was  hammered with a ferocious rainstorm. The gusty winds, which reached as high as 50 mph in the city, left more than 400 residents without power on Saturday afternoon. Long Island Power Authority technicians are still working to restore electricity to many homes in the city. As of 3 p.m. today, LIPA officials said there were still 342 locations in the city without power.
