About Esteban

Esteban arrived in Glen Cove three years ago from Chile and has since been nominated to participate in the annual New York State Assembly and Senate Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute. He is one of only 12 Nassau County 11th and 12th graders selected based on their academic performance, attendance record, involvement in leadership activities and possession of leadership qualities. Esteban volunteers with the La Fuerza community-based after-school ESL tutoring program three days a week at Glen Cove High School and will soon begin volunteering at Finley Middle School.

Esteban also coaches a La Fuerza soccer team. After school, he volunteers at after school, looking after young children in the school’s daycare program.

Key to Awesomeness:

“I always try to do my best to help my fellow ESL classmates and the entire school when I can," Esteban said. "I began offering to teach my classmates English in their homes. That helped me to find out what I want to do in life after college, and that is to become an ESL teacher. I like it. I feel very comfortable doing it. I believe those of us who are not from this country who have been able to master the English language have a responsibility to help others expand their vocabulary, improve their communication skills, and motivate them to become productive members of society. This is very inspiring to me.”
