Big Red Sells Raffles to Benefit Marine

Team celebrated more than just big win at Saturday night's game.

The Glen Cove football team, along with High School Principal Dr. Joseph Hinton and Athletic Director Denise Kiernan, organized a fundraiser at Saturday night's Sept. 11 game against West Hempstead to benefit Sergeant Leo Chargualaf—a marine injured by an IED while serving in Iraq.

Over $10,000 was raised with the help of two anonymous donors.

The Big Red team sold raffle tickets for four President's Suite tickets to the Sept. 19 New York Jets – New England Patriots football game.

The funds were initially raised for "Team Chris—" a fundraiser for the family of Corporal Christopher Scherer, a Glen Cover who lost his life in 2007 while serving in Iraq; all proceeds went to Sgt. Chargualaf, who was one of Scherer's fellow marines.

Another United States Marine, Corporal Brian Monohan of Glen Cove High School's Class of 2006, was also honored during the raffle drawing.
