Glen Cove Boys Basketball Defeat North Shore

Big Red wins first game in February against cross town rival.

. After being crushed by Floral Park late last week, both teams came out searching for a redeeming victory. The game began with North Shore establishing a 2-0 lead for the first 3 minutes of the game until Glen Cove began aggressively scoring interior baskets thanks to Chris Theodoreau and Mauro Carignano's early attacks. The quarter ended with a 15-14 North Shore lead.

In the second quarter, Glen Cove stormed in with an 8-2 run in the first five minutes and capitalized on North Shore's turnovers. North Shore’s Justin Bell kept the game close scoring 13 of his 27 in the first half as the game was 25-24.

Frankie Mickens began the third quarter with an amazing acrobatic shot. North Shore followed up with a small run after two Glen Cove turnovers which led to successive baskets by North Shore’s Justin Bell.

Glen Cove’s coach Peter Falen immediately called a time out.

“Our offensive possessions were too rushed and we were forcing passes,” said coach Falen. “If we control it and work the ball around, we’ll get quality shots in transition.”

After the time out, that's exactly what Big Red did: they ended the third quarter with a 32-27 lead.

The fourth quarter was more of the same as the Big Red increased their defensive intensity, which produced offensive baskets. Despite only scoring 7 points, junior forward Yadiyah Lettellier seemed to pride himself on getting to the rack effortlessly by driving to the basket and getting to the line. That infectious attitude carried over to his teammates as they pulled out a 52-43 on the road.

Heroes: Yadiyah Letellier's defensive anchor in the Big Red’s second half play. He had five trips to the free throw line and had two key defensive blocks in the fourth quarter. “Yadiyah Letellier was the player of this game,” said Falen. “He held Justin Bell to 14 points in the second half when we switched to a box and one in the second half.”

Turning point: The second half. “I told the kids whatever team hit the most free throws in the second half would be successful in the outcome of the game,” said Falen.

Chris Theodoreau played well, scoring 11 points along with Frankie Mickens’ six points. Hustle points is what won this game. Glen Cove out rebounded North Shore by double digits in this game.

Quotable: “Hard work pays off,” said Falen. “I told them to practice like you play.”

Bottom Line: Glen Cove played team basketball. They rebounded, utilized their big men in the post, got to the basket, drew fouls, and defended. “We had a good practice on Thursday,” said Falen. “Both our JV and Varsity team won today which is a testament to playing the right way.”

Key Stats: Mauro Carignano had a game-high 12 rebounds. Brandon Deloatch – the sophomore was recently promoted to the varsity squad after spending a majority of the year on JV – earned his keep this evening as a spark off the bench. He had a career-high 13 points
