Glen Cove Boys Basketball Falls to West Hempstead

Big Red lost to Rams 59-48 in conference opener.

It was an emotional atmosphere at West Hempstead High School as Glen Cove boys basketball traveled to meet the Rams for both teams' conference opening game.

It was a back and forth affair for four quarters but the Rams were able to build a solid late game lead and defeat Glen Cove 59-48.

"They let their emotions get too high and they lost control a little bit in the second half," said coach Peter Falen. "The loss of control lead to too many turnovers which was our downfall."

Big Red was solid in the first half taking a 23-20 lead in to the locker room.

But in the third quarter they fell apart; The home crowd cheered as West Hempstead repeatedly stole the ball and capitalized on their offensive possessions. Guard Tyree Glascoe made back to back layups off of steals to the delight of the fans.

Big Red made a small comeback in the fourth to bring the score to 41-39 in favor of West Hempstead. But that would be as close as they would get.

The Rams went on another robbing spree, taking away the ball at mid court multiple times and charging ahead to a 52-42 lead. The final score would be 59-48.

Turning Point: The fourth quarter. The Rams had the home crowd on their  side and they let them carry them to victory.

Heroes: Great help off the bench from junior Yadiyah Letellier who had 13 points. Point guard Mauro Carignano had 11 points.

Bottom Line: Big Red was emotional on both sides of the floor and as it turned out it did not help them in the end. They exulted off of made layups and carried on when the refs called fouls against them. If they had been a little more patient and less demonstrative the result might have been different.

Quote: "Our guys fought to the finish and we had a lo tof great help off the bench from Letellier and Chris Theodoreau," said coach Falen. "We just had too many turnovers as a result of our emotions."
