Glen Cove Cheerleaders Take Third in Nationals

Competition was a first for Glen Cove High School's varsity squad.

Glen Cove High School's varsity cheerleaders won third place in a national contest in Myrtle Beach, S.C. recently, according to the district.

The squad placed in the Large Varsity Non-Tumble Division of the PANAM Cheer Ltd. Nationals. They qualified for the competition in January at the Tri-State School & Rec Championships in East Stroudsberg, Penn.

Coach Amy Serr said this was the first year the team competed in a competition not on Long Island.

"This was an idea since last year. There was just so much fundraising necessary to enter the competition and then for travel, but the girls held fundraisers, and morning and weekend practices; it was just a very driven team this year," Serr said.

The Cheer Ltd. competition is smaller and more affordable than the country's largest televised nationals, she said, but achieving third place in their division was no small feat.
